Tiny Creatures, Big Surprises
This puzzle leans heavily on the small and overlooked. ANT, APE, SNAIL — three-letter and four-letter words that hide perfectly inside any 12×12 grid. They're easy to miss because your eyes naturally scan for longer letter patterns. The shorter the word, the more likely it's right under your nose.
Then there's the OTTER and the SKUNK, both clever animals with reputations. Otters hold hands while they sleep so they don't drift apart in the water. Skunks, well, you've probably heard about their famous defense. The CHIMP and the WHALE round out the mammal group — one is a clever primate, the other is the largest animal that ever lived.
💡 Tip: I always start with three- and four-letter words first when I solve these. Once ANT, APE, and the short ones are crossed off, the bigger words like FIREFLY and MERMAID feel much less crowded on the grid. It's a habit my kids picked up after the first few puzzles.
A MERMAID is in this puzzle too — a fun nod to ocean folklore. And a FIREFLY, the small beetle that lights up summer evenings. Both add a bit of magic to what's otherwise a list of everyday creatures.
